Starting a Street by Street Group

Anyone who wants to make their neighbourhood more neighbourly can get the ball rolling. The first step is to download the Street by Street Participant Kit, familiarise yourself with the Street by Street model and consider initiating a group.

To get a group going, there needs to be one or more residents willing to be Community Connectors. Community Connectors are those willing to make it all happen – inviting others, making them welcome, organising. They are leaders who also encourage others to be leaders, as many hands make light work.

There is also a Community Connector Kit to assist you. You can call us to discuss the possibilities and we can also put you in touch with other Street by Street Connectors.

“I was new to Melbourne and I thought becoming a Community Connector would be a great way to meet people. We had 29 neighbours come along to our first get-together was very successful at a local bar/cafe. They had lots of great ideas for what we can do as a neighbour group.” Community Connector, St Kilda Neighbours Group

If you are in an existing community group and feel that the Street by Street approach is compatible with what you do, talk to us about joining forces. You may wish to utilise the Street by Street approach to revitalise your group (if needed), broaden what you do (if you have a single focus) or go more local (if you cover a large area such as an entire suburb or locality).

If you’d like to be in a Street by Street Group but don’t want to be a community connector, or don’t want to kick it off on your own, you could do a letter box drop (we suggest 200-400 households near you) asking for people interested in being a Community Connector of a neighbourhood group – there’s a sample invitation under Resources.

A Street by Street Group can also be initiated by an existing, incorporated community organisation. They take steps to find a local Community Connector. There is a separate Community Partner Kit with information on how to initiate and/or support a Street by Street Group.
